There is a lot of evidence that periodontal disease is directly linked to diabetes. Those with gum disease are at high risk for diabetes and 95% of those with diabetes already have gum disease. Close to one third of diabetics remain undiagnosed.
Gum disease can also point to serious systemic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, some cancers, and osteoporosis. It can also advance with little to no symptoms. Lookout for the following:

  • Red, swollen, or receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Bleeding when brushing, flossing, or eating
  • A change in your bite
