Are dentures a good option for you?

Tooth loss becomes surprisingly common with age. In fact, close to one in four adults over 65 has lost all of their natural teeth. Dentures remain one of the most trusted ways to address this, and the results are often so seamless that you may have met someone wearing a full set without ever noticing. Wondering if they could be the right fit for you?

Dentures tend to work well for patients who:

  • Are looking to replace multiple teeth, or all of them.
  • Steer clear of smoking and tobacco products.
  • Have a jawbone healthy enough to support them (something we can help build up, if needed).
  • Don’t struggle with chronic dry mouth.
  • Are ready to commit to a home care routine.
  • Plan to keep up with regular dental checkups, the same as they would with natural teeth.

Keeping your dentures in good shape

A big part of denture care happens right here in our chair, through regular cleanings and checkups. No matter how well your dentures fit, ongoing visits still matter. We’ll check the fit and condition of your dentures, then take a broader look at your gums, tongue, jaw and the rest of your mouth. Our focus stretches well past the dentures themselves to your oral health as a whole.

Between visits, a few habits will help your dentures last:

  • Take them out overnight so your mouth gets a break.
  • Soak them in warm water, never hot water, using a denture cleanser.
  • Store them in water whenever they’re not in your mouth, so they don’t dry out or lose their shape.
  • Massage and clean your gums while your dentures are out.
  • If a regular toothbrush feels harsh, a soft, damp cloth wrapped around your finger works well too.
  • Still have some natural teeth with partial dentures? Keep brushing them like you always have.

How much do dentures cost in Georgetown?

Denture pricing varies quite a bit from patient to patient, since every mouth and every treatment plan is different. As a general guide, a single arch of full or partial dentures typically runs between $900 and $3,500, with a complete set covering both the upper and lower arch often landing between $1,800 and $7,000. Implant-supported dentures sit at the higher end, with costs frequently starting around $15,000 and climbing well beyond that depending on the number of implants involved.

A few factors that shape your final cost include:

  • The type of denture that best suits your needs.
  • Whether dental extractions or other preparation work is required.
  • Any x-rays needed to plan your treatment.
  • Whether you choose implant supported dentures for extra stability.

No two smiles are the same, which is why an oral exam and a conversation with a dentist are the best way to understand your options and what they’ll cost. Our team, led by Dr. Asha Bhanot, is happy to walk you through your options and provide a personalized quote.

Your consultation will include a close look at your teeth, gums and soft tissues, along with the shape and condition of your jaw and bite. We want to understand how your whole mouth looks, feels and functions before recommending any dentures. Just as important is hearing what you’re hoping to achieve, whether that’s comfort, confidence or simply a better fit, so we can help you find the right solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Modern dentures are designed to closely match the shape, colour and size of natural teeth, so they blend in seamlessly with your smile. There’s often an adjustment period as your mouth gets used to them, but most patients find that dentures feel comfortable and natural within a few weeks.

Yes, though it takes some practice at first. We recommend starting with softer foods and gradually working your way up to your usual diet as you get used to chewing with your new dentures. Over time, most patients can enjoy a wide variety of foods with confidence.

With proper care, dentures typically last five to ten years. Your mouth naturally changes shape over time, so periodic adjustments or a reline may be needed to keep your dentures fitting comfortably. Regular checkups help us catch these changes early.

It’s common to notice a slight change in speech when you first get dentures, but this usually improves quickly with practice. Reading out loud or practising tricky words at home can help you adjust faster.

It depends on your situation. If you have teeth that are too damaged or unhealthy to save, extractions may be needed before your dentures are made. We’ll walk you through the process and timeline together, so you know exactly what to expect before treatment begins.

Full dentures replace all of the teeth in an arch, while partial dentures fill in gaps when some natural teeth remain. Your dentist can help determine which option is right for you based on how many teeth you’re missing and the overall health of your mouth.
