Cavities can be an incredibly uncomfortable issue and, if left untreated, can evolve into much more severe issues like root canals or even tooth loss. That’s why South Georgetown Dental and our experienced dentists, Dr. Asha Bhanot and Dr. Ivana Pilijek, are dedicated to providing you immediate dental treatment and comfort.

If Dr. Bhanot or Dr. Pilijek detect a cavity, they’ll carefully remove any decayed areas of the tooth. Depending on the cavity’s size, a white filling material known as composite resin can be used to match your teeth’s natural colour – giving you a more natural appearance compared to silver fillings.

If the cavity occurs farther back, such as on your rear molars, more traditional filling materials like porcelain or silver may be used due to their durability and strength given the forces encountered from chewing that are centred on the back of your mouth.

Direct vs. Indirect

When it comes to fillings, there are two main types: direct and indirect. Before treatment, our dentists will discuss your options and help you choose the best type for your specific case.

Direct fillings are what come to mind for most when they think about fillings; they’re immediately placed into a prepped cavity during your visit. Drs. Bhanot and Pilijek will prepare your tooth for application, install the filling, and adjust it all in one visit.

Indirect fillings generally take longer to perform, with at least two visits needed. This category includes things like crowns, veneers, and bridges. During your initial visit, Drs. Bhanot and Pilijek will prep your tooth (or teeth) and make an impression. They then place a temporary covering over the affected area while the impression is sent away to create the new filling, whatever it may be. Upon your following appointment, the filling will be cemented into the prepared cavity and adjusted as needed.
